Bringing Foot Care to St. Vincent … Step by Step

In April 2008, Alnoor Ladhani traveled with his wife to the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  This archipelago of islands in the southern Caribbean is known for its beautiful scenery and blue seas, as featured in many scenes in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

The main purpose of this trip, however, was not to admire the scenery, but to deliver lectures on basic foot care techniques to both hospital and community nurses.  Alnoor introduced himself to the health care community of St. Vincent as a potential resource for chiropodial concerns, as well as gained a better understanding of the unique circumstances surrounding the delivery of health care in St. Vincent.

Alnoor delivered two lectures to the nursing community: one at the hospital in Kingstown, the capital, to the nursing staff; the second at a private facility to the community nurses.  The focus of the lectures was to introduce basic foot care techniques that the nurses can incorporate into their daily practice, as well as basic instrumentation.

After the lecture, Alnoor addressed questions posed by the nurses.  The community nurses had also invited a few of their patients, and every patient present had a consultation with Alnoor, who provided the nurses with practical recommendations as to how best to manage their patients’ conditions with the resources available to them on the island.

As an added bonus for attending the lecture, every nurse received an instrument set (approximate value of $500.00 Canadian).  Alnoor had brought a total of 60 sets with him, all of which were distributed.  The sets were the generous donation of Superior Medical Canada.

The primary focus of health care in St. Vincent is the treatment of disease and alleviation of symptoms related to disease.  This includes the many complications of type II diabetes, which afflicts an alarmingly high percentage of at least 50% of the population.  Many of the questions posed to Alnoor were specific to diabetic complications and diseases of the feet.

Alnoor hopes to go back to St. Vincent to continue educating nurses, as well as other health care professionals on the island, about the various aspects of foot health.
